Student João Vinícius Ferreira Simões, aged 25, who died after receiving an electric shock after a storm hit the place where the “I Wanna Be Tour” festival was taking place in Rio de Janeiro, will be laid to rest and buried this Monday ( 11).
The wake is scheduled to start at 9am today, at the Capela da Funerário OAF, in Maricá, a municipality in the metropolitan region of Rio. The burial is scheduled for 3pm at the city's municipal cemetery.
Investigation
The young man's death is being investigated by the 32nd Police Station, in Taquara. According to the civil police, the event organizers and other witnesses will be called to testify.
The civil police reported that the location of the incident was not preserved for the investigation. Even so, technicians will be sent to inspect the area in case of any damage to the investigations, those responsible may be penalized.
The case
Student João Vinícius Ferreira Simões, aged 25, died after being electrocuted during the “I Wanna Be Tour” festival, in the early hours of this Sunday (10), in Riocentro, in the west zone of Rio. He reportedly received the electrical discharge when he pulled over in a food truck in the event's food court. It was raining heavily at the time of the incident.
A CNN , a witness reported what had happened. She stated that after the band's show “A Day To Remember”, the rain intensified and spectators turned to the food court space for shelter.
The festival team decided to postpone the entry of one of the performances due to rain, when shouting broke out at the venue.
“I saw the boy who died lying in the food truck, arms crossed and paralyzed. […] Approximately one to two minutes later, the establishment's power was cut, some people approached the location and removed the victim from the structure. He was faint, and a young man from the audience started performing cardiac massage,” the young man told CNN .
The victim was rescued by medical teams that were available to festival goers and taken to Lourenço Jorge Municipal Hospital, where he was admitted into cardiorespiratory arrest and died.
What the festival organizers say
In a note published on social media, the event organizers confirmed that the young man was hit by an electrical discharge. According to the statement, heavy rain hit the city during the festival and people took shelter in a marquee, following safety protocol.
The organizers said that all efforts were made by the event's medical teams and that they deeply regret what happened, which is being investigated with the authorities. The event's producer said that it has already reached out to the victim's family to provide assistance.
According to them, so far, “information obtained confirms the compliance of the food truck operation”.
The event
The first edition of the tour began on the 2nd of this month, in the state of São Paulo. Until then, the festival visited other cities in the country, and featured the participation of important names in national and international Pop Punk and Emo, such as Fresno, Simple Plan, Pitty, NX Zero and Boys Like Girls.
The death of João Vinícius took place in the Rio edition, held at Riocentro, in the west of the capital of Rio de Janeiro, last Saturday (9).
