Young people’s morale rises after the coronavirus pandemic – “The stigma is starting to fade”

The trust of of young people at France in relation to the future, which has been particularly affected by pandemic her Covid-19 and its consequences, continues to recover, according to survey results released on Thursday (9/21).

“The stigma of the pandemic is beginning to fade”reports the annual survey by Injep (National Institute of Youth and Popular Education) and Crédoc (Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions), which assesses the morale of young people aged 18-30.

The results of the survey show for the year 2023 an improvement in the well-being of young people who were particularly prone to “deterioration in their mental health” and more exposed to “economic and work consequences” during the health crisis.

Despite the “potentially difficult context for young people”, undermined by “inflation, climate change or the war in Ukraine”, 64% of 18-30-year-olds say their lives meet their expectations.

The year 2023 returns to the average of the last eight years and shows more positive results in terms of young people’s optimism about their near future.

Greater confidence for the immediate future

67% of them say they are certain about the next three years, one percentage point more than in 2022 and seven points compared to 2021.

Comparatively, “only 44% of people over 30 are confident about the next three years”research shows.

According to the report, this result is partly explained by a “significantly more positive labor market context in 2023” and “a reduction in the unemployment rate that particularly benefits the younger generations.”

In detail, young people’s feelings vary according to determinants such as gender, education level, living with parents and income level.

The mental state of young women remains more affected than that of young men. However, the year 2023 marks “a clear improvement in the morale of young women.”

“47% of them today express a positive state of mind, an increase of six percentage points compared to the corresponding percentage in 2022 and nine points compared to 2021”the report clarifies.
