Young Juliana Leite Rangel, 26 years old, shot in the head during an action by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) on Christmas Eve in Baixada Fluminense, showed an improvement in her clinical condition and is now breathing without the help of equipment, according to the latest medical report released by the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipalized Hospital, in Duque de Caxias (RJ).
According to the unit, the young woman remains in good general condition, maintaining progressive clinical improvement every day.
In a statement, the City of Duque de Caxias reported that Juliana “has already started to breathe spontaneously, being removed from mechanical ventilation support, returning only to respiratory physiotherapy for a few periods.”
According to the medical report, the young woman had her sedation completely suspended last Thursday (2).
“Since then, her neurological conditions have improved, showing spontaneous eye opening, good interaction with the environment and people, appearing lucid, obeying commands, mobilizing all four limbs and showing preserved sensitivity”, says another excerpt from the document.
According to the information, Juliana “has been improving her level of consciousness, without new deficits, with spontaneous awakening and interaction with the environment”.
The process of weaning from mechanical ventilation will continue according to the patient’s tolerance. Juliana remains hospitalized in intensive care, being monitored by the neurosurgery service together with a multidisciplinary team.
Remember the case
Juliana was in the car with her family on the way to Niterói for Christmas dinner, when she was shot by PRF agents during an approach. Her father was also shot.
On Christmas Day, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) initiated a criminal investigative procedure to investigate the conduct of PRF agents.
The PRF reported that the agents – two men and one woman – involved in the case were preventively removed from operational activities.
