Young woman shot by PRF in RJ should have no consequences; “miracle”, says doctor

After being shot during an approach by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) on Christmas Eve, 26-year-old Juliana Rangel showed significant improvement and should have no consequences, according to doctors at the Hospital Municipalizado Adão Pereira Nunes, in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense.

The young woman, who spent 30 days hospitalized in a very serious condition, was discharged from the Intensive Care Center (CTI) last Saturday (26) and is undergoing rehabilitation in the ward.

According to the hospital’s head of neurosurgery, Vinícius Mansur Zogbi, Juliana arrived at the hospital in critical condition. “The injury caused a burst fracture to the skull, with bone fragments close to a crucial vein. Despite the severity, she was quickly taken to surgery, where we managed to drain the hematoma and stabilize the condition.”

For the medical team, the fact that the injury occurred close to a “noble” area of the skull, responsible for vital functions such as breathing and heartbeat, and that there were no neurological consequences, makes Juliana’s recovery a true “miracle”.

“A centimeter further to the side, she probably wouldn’t be alive. She was lucky to arrive at a hospital where she could be treated immediately and, for those who believe in miracles, she is certainly an example”, said Zogbi.

The medical team highlighted other factors that contributed to the recovery, such as the commitment of the multidisciplinary team, the hospital equipment and the quick rescue.

During her hospitalization, Juliana faced complications, including the need for prolonged mechanical ventilation. However, she is now breathing without the help of equipment and has started the rehabilitation process.

“She is feeding through a tube, and we are working to rehabilitate her to eat normally”, explained the hospital director, Thiago Resende, who also mentioned other gradual advances, such as the recovery of mobility and speech.

Juliana is lucid, interacts well and has already recovered her recent memory, which indicates that she will not have permanent brain damage. In a video sent to the press, Juliana and her mother thanked them for their prayers and praised the hospital professionals.

The young woman remains under care in the infirmary, but doctors believe that her hospital discharge could occur within weeks, depending on the evolution of her clinical condition.
