YPPOA: 2,330,000 euros in cultural projects in Leros are in the process of implementation

The restoration and reuse of the historic building “Hotel Leros” in Lakki, Leros, budget 2,197,323 euros, joined the Fund for Recovery and Durability, as announced by the Ministry of Culture. Also, according to the same announcement, with a decision of the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, a series of studies for the maturation of projects in Leros are included for funding in the National Development Program of the Ministry of Culture, in order to be implemented within the new programming period 2021-2027. The studies concern the protection, promotion and visitation of Panteli Castle, the restoration and promotion of the churches of Agia Kioura in Partheni, Agios Petros in Drymonas and Agios Zacharias in Merikia, as well as the restoration and promotion of Bourtzi Castle.

As stated by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, “fulfilling in full our commitment to the rapid development of important projects and interventions for the promotion of the cultural wealth of Leros – and after the elaboration of the Strategic Plan for the” Promotion of architecture and urban planning of the settlements of Lakki and Lepida “, by the Ministry of Culture, the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Thessaly that we presented in December 2021- we proceed with the implementation of the project of restoration and reuse as a cultural multipurpose and for hosting artists , an emblematic building in the architecturally special complex of buildings in Lakki, as we announced during our recent visit to Rhodes. , which router and which we have, and which have a supra-local character and contribute decisively to the development dynamics of the Dodecanese “.

More specifically, the restoration project of the historic building “HOTEL LEROS” in Lakki, Leros, budget 2,197,323, euros provides a fully energy efficient building with cultural uses and a municipal hostel of 20 rooms for artists. An ODAP shop and a summer cinema are also planned.

The hotel “Leros” or “Albergo Roma”, as it was known during the Italian period, belongs to the complex City Hall or Municipio, theater Giacomo Puccino, Albergo Roma and Agora or Mercato, administrative, economic and cultural center in the middle of the beach of the residential complex Lakki or Porto Lago, the well-known Italian military base in the Dodecanese. The cinema and the Hotel Leros have been characterized since 1995 as historical monuments, as “they are remarkable examples of buildings of Italian Architecture and the interwar period, important for the study of the history of architecture in this area and are integral parts of the architectural and urban of the city of Lakki “. The monument together with the other buildings of Porto Lago and their urban organization were and are important examples of rationalist architecture. The restoration project of the Hotel is the subject of a Programmatic Agreement for Cultural Development, which has been signed between the Ministry of Culture, the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Leros.

According to the same announcement of the Ministry of Culture, the maturation studies concerning monuments of Leros are the following:

1. Integrated management, protection, promotion and traffic of Panteli Castle in Leros (budget 60,000 euros). It concerns the compilation of studies of architectural fixing and restoration of the castle fortifications, structural restoration of the fortifications and static adequacy of the structures for its attendance, architectural reconstruction of the theater, as well as museological-museographic study of the creation of the space.

2. Restoration and promotion of the churches: Agia Kioura, Agios Petros in Drymonas and Agios Zacharias in Merikia (budget 45,000 euros). It concerns the compilation of studies aimed at the restoration and promotion of the three important monuments of Leros.

3. Restoration, configuration and promotion of the Bourtzi Fortress (budget 30,000 euros). It includes the final architectural study, the studies of fixing, restoration of the fort and configuration-enhancement of the surrounding area, as well as the study of structural restoration of the fortress. The studies for Bourtzi are the subject of a Programmatic Agreement for Cultural Development, which has been signed between the Ministry of Culture, the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Leros.
