Detained British-Iranian Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe was handed over to a British team at Iran’s Imam Khomeini airport and is leaving Iran after London paid off its $ 530 million debt to Tehran, Iranian media reported today.
Earlier in the day, Hojjat Kermani’s lawyer told Reuters that Zagari-Ratcliffe and another British-Iranian detainee, Anousheh Asuri, were on their way to Tehran airport to leave Iran.
“She (Zagari-Ratcliffe) was handed over to the British team after being flown to Imam Khomeini International Airport this morning,” Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported.
According to the same source, “the British government paid off its $ 530 million debt to Tehran before the liberation.”
While the governments of Britain and Iran have stated that there is no connection between the debt and the case of Zagari-Ratcliffe, unnamed Iranian officials said according to Iranian state media in 2021 that the British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Rathali will be released. as soon as the debt is repaid.
