Zakharova: Big mistake of North Macedonia to donate tanks to Ukraine

THE Russia considers the decision of the North Macedonian authorities to donate T-72 tanks to Ukraine a “big mistake”, said the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“Although it is outdated equipment, the fact remains that Skopje is a loyal NATO ally and is involved in the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, thus contributing to the continuation of the criminal activity of the regime in Kyiv against the civilian population in Donbas,” Zakharova added.

Her Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense of North Macedonia, reacting to these statements by the representative of the Russian Ministry pointed out that the “North Macedonia is a sovereign state that makes decisions independently, guided by the principles of respect for international law, the UN Charter, the principles and commitments of the OSCE to protect the European security architecture and global stability.”

North Macedonia, NATO’s newest member state, announced last week that it is sending T-72 tanks to Ukraine’s armed forces as Skopje prepares to modernize its armed forces.

North Macedonia’s defense ministry did not specify the number of these tanks being sent to Ukraine. These are battle tanks which Skopje had procured in 2001 from Ukraine.

The government of North Macedonia has unequivocally condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while largely following EU decisions on the issue and imposing sanctions against Russia.
