Russia’s foreign ministry has said in a statement that it did not provide evidence that the BBC was being used to undermine the internal political situation and security in Russia.
Moscow claims that foreign media, including the British, have a biased view of the world. Some Western governments have denied the allegations and have blamed Russian state media for biased coverage of the events – including the invasion of Ukraine.
The European Union (EU) on Wednesday banned RT and Sputnik over their systematic misinformation about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he said. The British regulator was also considering whether RT would be allowed to maintain its license in the country, as 15 investigations into its impartiality and another 12 on its program are already under way.
“The fact that Russian journalists can at least somehow work there (in Britain) is solely linked to London fears that it will jeopardize the position of BBC radio and television in Russia, as it is far from “to play the last role in undermining the political stability and security in our country,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
The BBC declined to comment. However, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the BBC was operating independently of the government. “It is important that the BBC and other news organizations are independent and free to broadcast the news the way they do,” he said.
