No matter how “impossible” your dreams may seem, if you put in the effort and work every day for them, you can eventually achieve them. Sure, you need a lot of discipline and passion, since big dreams don’t come true without big sacrifices.
Zara Rutherford is a British and Belgian girl who, being very clear about what she wanted, fought for her dreams and a few days ago, on January 20, at just 19 years old, she became the youngest woman in history to give around the world in a plane landing in the Belgian city of Kortrijk.
The teenager who went around the world
His long journey began in August, when he left Belgium with the intention of fulfilling his goal of traveling around the world in a solitary trip by plane. Zara did not travel in a large plane with a crew and co-pilots, but instead ventured out in a small single-engine plane piloted solely by her. When her adventure was just beginning, she introduced herself very simply on her Facebook page.
My name is Zara Rutherford. I am a teenager. I’ll try to fly alone around the world.
It was quite an adventure
After five months and traveling 51 thousand kilometers, his journey ended a few days ago. Of course, it wasn’t easy, and Zara encountered obstacles of all kinds, from having to travel over Florida in the middle of hurricane season to being stranded in Alaska due to problems with her visa and the area’s frigid temperatures.
He flew over Siberia in a season where temperatures reach minus 35 degrees Celsius and his route was altered countless times, such as when he was denied access to Chinese airspace and when smog in Asian countries prevented him from flying over them. However, he was able to overcome the obstacles and in this way he learned that he is more resilient than he had imagined.
“You are capable of more than you think”
One thing I learned on this trip, and I think it applies to everyone, is that you are capable of more than you think.
Despite the inconvenience, Zara continued her journey. In the airports she visited she always found pilots willing to advise her, who were very impressed with her courage and determination. She even met the pilot she dethroned as the youngest woman to accomplish that feat: Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan-American pilot who flew around the world in 2017 when she was 30 years old.
“I hope to encourage more girls”
At 19, Zara already has a great achievement to her name, but this is just the beginning for her. The young woman wants to study Electrical or Computer Engineering and she dreams of flying even higher: she wants to be an astronaut. Also, she hopes to be an example for other girls who are interested in aviation, since there are not many female pilots.
Growing up, I didn’t see many other female pilots. I always thought that was really discouraging. So I hope to encourage more girls to get into aviation and show a friendly face, so if a girl likes aviation and she sees me, she knows she’s not the only one.
