After 23 years, Ukraine has restored the rail link with neighboring Moldova, through which about 10 million tons of goods can be moved annually, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message on Monday.
Although it did not specify the types of goods, Ukraine aspires to find new ways to export millions of tons of grain blocked by the Russian invasion. Moldova borders Romania, which is a member of the European Union.
The railway line, 22 kilometers long, connects the city of Berezhne in western Ukraine with the city of Basarabeska in southern Moldova.
For his part, Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said in a Facebook post that the rail link will provide an alternative to exports through the port of Odessa.
After the agreement reached between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by Turkey and under the auspices of the UN, it became possible to resume grain exports from Ukrainian ports.
