Zelensky appeals for support for Ukraine during Glastonbury festival

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky made an appeal by videoconference this Friday (24) to the crowd at the music festival of Glastonbury, in the UK, asking for support and to spread the truth about the invasion of Russia and pressure politicians to help restore peace.

Zelensky, dressed in his traditional military uniform, drew cheers after the pre-recorded message was played on the music festival’s Other stage ahead of a performance by rock band The Libertines.

“Russia stole our peace,” he told the crowd at the event, one of the biggest music festivals in the world.

“Glastonbury is the greatest concentration of freedom these days and I ask that you share that feeling with everyone whose freedom is under attack,” Zelensky said, speaking in English.

“The more people who join us in defending freedom and truth, the sooner Russia’s war against Ukraine will end,” he added. “Prove that freedom always wins.”

Zelensky, who built a close working relationship with the British prime minister, Boris Johnson has routinely appeared by videoconference before national parliaments and global bodies to implore countries to help Ukraine in the war, which Russia calls a “special military operation”.

He also gave a video speech before the Eurovision Song Contest and also during the Cannes Film Festival.
