In a statement, the Ukrainian president’s office said on Wednesday (4) that Volodymyr Zelensky asked the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, for help to save people trapped at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.
“The lives of the people who remain there are in danger. All are important to us. We ask for your help to save them,” Zelensky said.
On Monday (2), a Ukrainian fighter said up to 200 civilians remained trapped in bunkers at the steel mill.. The site is considered the last stronghold under Ukrainian control in the city of Mariupol.
As the fighting in Azovstal escalated, soldiers and civilians took refuge in basements of the steel mill. In images released by Maxar Technologies, it is possible to see several buildings in the complex destroyed, but it is not possible to identify whether the hiding places were hit.

THE CNN could not independently confirm the number of people remaining at the plant.
Last weekend, around 100 civilians were rescued from the scene in an evacuation organized by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, even said on Monday that the process is very difficult and that the Russians are creating obstacles for the departure of civilians.
So far, no plans have been revealed to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Azovstal.
