Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Russia on Sunday to confirm the ceasefire from May 12, stating that Ukraine would be ready to meet for direct negotiations with the country.
On Saturday (10), Zelensky received the support of major European powers and US President Donald Trump for a 30-day ceasefire starting on Monday (12).
Russian President Vladimir Putin replied on Sunday morning with a direct negotiation proposal with Kiev from Thursday (15) in Türkiye.
“It’s a positive sign that the Russians finally began to consider the end of the war … and the first step to actually ending any war is a ceasefire,” Zelensky said at X.
“It makes no sense to continue the killing for a single day. We hope Russia confirms a ceasefire-total, lasting and reliable-from tomorrow, May 12, and Ukraine is ready to gather,” he added.
Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, said at Telegram that he first needed a ceasefire, “then everything else.”
He said Russia should not disguise his desire to continue war with word games. This feeling was shared by other Ukrainian authorities.
Andriy Kovalenko, an employee of the Ukraine National Security and Defense Council, wrote on Telegram: “A complete ceasefire. Russia must agree with something that is constantly trying to avoid.”
