Zelensky at the Grammys: Our musicians wear bulletproof vests instead of tuxedos

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky intervened via video message at the Grammy Awards last Sunday night, urging those watching him to support his country “in any way you can”.

“The war. What is the exact opposite of music? The silence of ruined cities and the dead,” said Zelensky, who appeared in the video wearing the famous khaki T-shirt before appearing on the Grammy stage to be sung by John Legend with them. Ukrainian artists Mika Newton and Liuba Yakimchukt.

“Our musicians wear bulletproof vests instead of tuxedos. They sing for the injured in hospitals, even for those who can not hear them. But the music is heard regardless of the circumstances,” he said.

“We are defending our freedom to live, to love, to be heard. On our land we are fighting Russia, which with its bombs is causing a horrible silence. A death silence,” he added.

“Fill the silence with your music. Fill it today to tell our story,” Zelenski said.

“Tell the truth about the war on social media, on television. Support us in any way you can. Anyone, but not in silence. And then peace will come,” he concluded.
