Zelensky: Calls Macron to Ukraine to see if genocide has taken place

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky stated that she had invited him Emanuel Macron to visit Ukraine to see for himself that Russian forces are committing “genocide”, a term his French counterpart has so far refused to use.

“As for Emmanuel Macron, I have spoken to him,” President Zelensky said in an interview with CNN on Friday. “I think he will want to see Russia engage in dialogue,” he said, explaining the French leader’s refusal to denounce a “genocide” in Ukraine, as opposed to US President Joe Biden.

The Ukrainian president had initially assessed last Wednesday that this denial was “very offensive”.

“I told him I wanted him to understand that this is not a war, that this is nothing more than a genocide. “I invited him to come whenever he had the chance,” Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN. “He will come, and he will see, and I am sure he will understand.”

Emanuel Macron, in the middle of a campaign for the second round of the presidential elections next Sunday, had explained on Thursday that the characterization “genocide” should, in his opinion, be “attributed by lawyers, not politicians” and that a “Return to verbal escalation” does not help Ukraine.

In an interview broadcast today, the Ukrainian president also said he wished to see Joe Biden in Ukraine, who surprised him by saying this week that Russian forces were committing “genocide.”

“I think he will come,” he said, “but the decision is his, of course, it depends on the security situation,” he said. “But he is the leader of the United States and I think that’s why he has to come and see.”

The US government is considering sending an envoy to Kyiv, but the White House has temporarily ruled out a high-risk visit by the president himself.
