Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today called on the European Union to stop all “trade” with Russia and, above all, to deny its energy resources, in a video in the Telegram messaging app.
“No euro for the occupying forces, close all your ports, do not send them your goods, deny them energy resources,” the Ukrainian president said.
“Without trade with you, without your businesses and your banks, Russia will no longer have the money for this war,” he added.
His message to the EU coincides with a meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers in Brussels today to consider possible new sanctions against Moscow, almost a month after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
The Europeans, who are heavily dependent on Russian hydrocarbons, have so far ruled out imposing sanctions on the sector, which is crucial to Russia’s economy.
“Please do not sponsor the weapons of this country, Russia,” Zelensky said before addressing the Germans directly: “You have the power, Europe has the power.”
Germany has been criticized for opposing a direct embargo on Russian hydrocarbons, on which it depends heavily.
The Kremlin announced today that a possible European embargo on Russian oil would hit “the whole world.”
“It would have a very serious impact on the world oil market, it would have a negative impact on the energy market in Europe. However, the Americans would not lose anything, that is obvious,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov.
