Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky downgraded his country’s chances of joining NATO in an interview with the German newspaper Bild on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Ukraine’s long-term ambition to join NATO has caused a deep crisis in East-West relations at a time when anxious diplomatic efforts are under way to prevent a military conflict.
Zelensky told Bild that although Ukraine had wanted to join NATO for years, the process was not moving forward.
“It is not just Russia that is against (our) accession. Some individual members of NATO support Moscow’s position. This is a common secret,” he said.
Zelensky did not name those countries, saying he still hoped for their support.
“We do not have easy relations with these neighbors and we do not want dangers or diplomatic disputes,” he said, adding that the Ukrainians themselves would have to decide on possible membership, but that there was no reason to hold a referendum yet.
“The road to NATO and the EU is very long,” he told Bild, calling on alliance members to support Ukraine.
