Zelensky fires Andriy Melnyk as Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin

LAST UPDATE: 19:20

Ukrainian President Zelensky fires Andriy Melnyk as ambassador to Germany. This afternoon, according to Spiegel, decree 479/2022, which provides for the dismissal, was published on the website of the President of Ukraine.

Melnyk’s dismissal was already expected earlier in the week. As reported at the time, the Ukrainian government was planning Melnyk’s return to Kyiv. There he would move to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as was said.

In a decree that gave no reason for the move, he announced the expulsion of Ukraine’s ambassadors to Germany, India, the Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary. It was not immediately clear whether those diplomats would receive new posts.

Zelensky has urged his diplomats to rally international support and military aid for Ukraine as it tries to fend off Russia’s invasion.

Kiev’s relations with Germany, which is heavily dependent on Russian energy supplies, are a particularly sensitive issue.
