Zelensky: I will stay in Kiev

LAST UPDATE: 09:20

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday he would stay in Kiev after appearing in a video shot outside his office in the capital, Reuters reported.

“We will not lay down our arms, we will defend our state,” Zelensky said.

According to the Associated Press, the Ukrainian president was called to leave Kiev by order of the US government, but rejected the proposal.

Zelensky responded: “The battle is here, I need ammunition, not a means of transportation,” according to a senior US intelligence official with immediate knowledge of the matter, who described Zelensky as optimistic.

He called on Ukrainians today not to lay down their arms and to defend Kiev, the capital where the Ukrainian army is confronting Moscow, two days after the start of the Russian invasion.

He also called on Ukrainians not to believe the “false information” circulating on the internet that he had called on the military to surrender.

“Our weapons are our truth. They are our land. Our children. We will defend all this. Long live Ukraine,” he said.

The video was broadcast as the Ukrainian capital struggled to fall into the hands of the Russian army, with fighting taking place at night on Victory Avenue, one of Kiev’s main thoroughfares.

According to the Ukrainian army, fierce fighting continued in the morning in Kiev.
