“My people have turned into an army, they have seen the destruction and the bloodshed shed by the enemy,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said recently in an online plenary session of the Italian parliament.
“A week ago I said that 79 children had been killed. Now it is 117, and that is not the final toll. Tens of thousands of families have been destroyed, as well as millions of homes. My people are burying their dead in parks, in mass graves,” he added. Zelensky.
He also stressed that Mariupol, which was completely destroyed, had a population of 500,000, like the Italian city of Genoa. “We need peace, but we only see and hear sirens, bombs and rockets,” Zelensky said.
“The Russians are raping, killing, torturing. Like the Nazis in World War II,” he said. The Ukrainian president insisted that “this war was organized only by Vladimir Putin” and called for increased sanctions against Moscow.
At the same time, he predicted that Ukraine would not be able to continue its exports and agricultural production, due to the huge disaster, the bombing.
Volodymyr Zelensky called on the Italians not to welcome other Russian tourists and to continue the seizure of the assets belonging to the oligarchs. “You are hosting more than 70,000 refugees, 25,000 are children. We are grateful to you,” he told members of the Italian parliament.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, in a speech shortly after the Ukrainian president’s speech, described the resistance in Mariupol and all other Ukrainian cities as “heroic” and added that “Italy expresses its deep gratitude to this people.”
“Our country is not looking elsewhere, the goal of sanctions is for Russia to come to the negotiating table honestly,” Draghi said.
He recalled that Italy had “frozen” assets of Russian oligarchs worth more than 800 million euros and that it aimed to overcome its energy dependence on Russia.
