Zelensky meets with military personnel in Kharkiv, city targeted by new Russian offensive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with senior military officials in the city of Kharkiv this Thursday (16), as Russian forces advance deeper into the northeast region.

The Ukrainian leader described an “extremely difficult” prospect for Kiev’s troops there, where “we are strengthening our units”.

He also met with senior officials from other border and frontline regions.

Efforts to reinforce Ukrainian forces focused on Lyptsi and Vovchansk; a city located about 60 km northeast of the city of Kharkiv and the site of some of the most intense battles near the border.

At the same time, Lieutenant Colonel Nazar Voloshyn warned that the fighting in the direction of Kharkiv “remains complicated and is changing dynamically.”

“Our forces are preventing the occupiers from gaining a foothold in certain areas of the northern Kharkiv region,” Voloshyn said in a televised interview.

“The enemy’s advance on certain settlements has been halted. However, the enemy is trying to secure conditions for a further advance in order to take advantageous positions,” Voloshyn added.

Russian forces have taken control of more than nine villages near the border since launching a surprise attack on May 10.
