Zelensky promises victory and “just peace” in speech marking two years of war

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, delivered a speech to Ukrainians this Saturday (24) from the Hostomel airfield, the place that witnessed the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Russia two years ago.

Plane wreckage and destroyed aviation equipment could be seen scattered across the field in the video Zelensky posted on social media.

During his speech, he thanked the Ukrainian people for their bravery and sacrifices made over the past two years.

The head of state also insisted that Ukraine will succeed and called on citizens and soldiers to have hope for victory.

“Today, unfortunately, each of us has someone to keep a moment of silence and honor the memory. Together we bow our heads; 730 days of pain. But at the same time, 730 days of hope,” said Zelensky.

“A nation that survived the first three days. And he didn't fall in the room. And he won on the fifth day. And then a month. And then six months. And now two years. We are fighting for this. For 730 days of our lives. And we will win. On the best day of our lives,” she concluded.

Russian airborne troops attempted to capture Hostomel airport, located in the suburbs of Kiev, on February 24, 2022, the first day of the war.

Then there was fierce fighting as Russia tried to send paratroopers to take the capital Kiev, just a few kilometers away.

Hostomel, a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, was chosen as the location for Ukrainian officials' meeting with Western leaders this Saturday.
