Russia has lost nine fighter jets in explosions at an airbase in Crimea, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, according to Bloomberg.
“Within a single day, the occupiers lost 10 fighter jets, nine in Crimea and one more in the direction of Zaporizhia,” Zelensky said in a video message. He also noted that further Russian armored vehicles, ammunition depots and supply routes were also destroyed.
Russian officials have denied that Ukrainian raids caused Tuesday’s explosions at the airbase. They spoke of ammunition being detonated in a warehouse amid lapses in safety regulations. Satellite images showed extensive damage to buildings and aircraft at the base that Russia has used to support its invasion.
Ukrainian officials hinted that their forces were involved in the incident, and a top adviser to the Ukrainian president warned that the explosions were “just the beginning” of efforts to retake Crimea. It is recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea in 2014 and has repeatedly declared that the peninsula is part of Russia, a claim rejected by the international community, which considers it Ukrainian territory.
