Russia is “trying to achieve in at least 100 days of war the goals it hoped to achieve in the first days after February 24,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a nightly video sermon.
Moscow has amassed “the maximum number of artillery, the maximum reserves” in the Donbas region, he said, adding that Kiev forces are doing what they can with their current defense, according to Bloomberg. Zelensky and other top officials made urgent calls for offensive weapons to repel Russia to the east.
Governor Serhiy Haiday told the Telegram that the city of Sheverodonetsk in western Lugansk had been bombed “very heavily” and that there had been street fighting in some places. A bridge between the city and the neighboring city of Lisichansk was damaged. Russian troops have suffered significant casualties and have retreated so far, he said.
Russian troops are making steady progress in eastern Ukraine with the help of more concentrated artillery and air bombardment, now controlling almost the entire Luhansk region and threatening to encircle thousands of Ukraine’s most experienced soldiers.
