Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday (6) that Russia suffered heavy losses in five months of fighting Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, in southern Russia, with almost 15,000 deaths.
“During the Kursk operation, the enemy has already lost 38 thousand of its soldiers in this direction alone, with almost 15 thousand of these losses being irreversible,” Zelensky said in his evening video speech.
The Ukrainian president, in his comments, offered no proof of the numbers he cited for Russian losses.
Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into the Kursk region in August and seized parts of the territory, although the Russian army said it had recovered much of the regions.
Ukraine said it launched a new offensive in the region on Sunday (5), but gave few details about the attacks.
Ukrainian and Western assessments say around 11,000 North Korean troops are fighting alongside Russian forces in the region. Russia neither confirmed nor denied the presence of troops.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that the Ukrainian advance had been thwarted and that its main force had been destroyed near the settlement of Berdin, on the outskirts of a road running northeast towards the city of Kursk.
The ministry said Russian forces had made important gains in eastern Ukraine, including capturing the town of Kurakhove.
Zelensky made no mention of Kurakhove in his comments on Monday.
