Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will maintain military pressure on Crimea occupied by Russiahe said in a video speech at a security conference in Prague, this Tuesday (24), which was marred by technical failures and a possible hacker attack.
Kiev has stepped up attacks against Russian forces in the Black Sea and Crimea, which was seized and annexed by Moscow in 2014, as Ukrainian forces continue a nearly five-month counteroffensive.
In comments marred by technical glitches, including one that intermittently modulated his voice to a higher pitch, Zelensky said the “illusion” of Russia’s dominance over Crimea and the Black Sea had been shattered.
“The Russian (Black Sea) fleet is no longer able to operate in the western part of the Black Sea and is gradually fleeing Crimea,” Zelensky said. “And this is a historic achievement.”
Ukrainian attacks in and around Crimea included attacks on a Russian air base on the peninsula, a Black Sea Fleet command post in Sevastopol and the only bridge connecting Crimea to Russia.
The strikes highlighted Kiev’s growing capabilities, which also include naval drones, as Moscow continues to bombard Ukraine from afar with long-range missiles and drones.
“We have not yet achieved full fire control over Crimea and the surrounding waters, but we will,” Zelensky said at a meeting of the Crimean Platform, a diplomatic initiative he launched in 2021. “This is a matter of time.”
A spokesman for the president of the Czech parliament said that the website for the event, which brought together parliamentarians from several countries, “was the target of a hacker attack”, but did not specify by whom.
