Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will talk to US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (19) and that the United States should monitor any possible ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia focused on power facilities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Tuesday to temporarily stop attacking Ukrainian energy facilities, but refused to endorse a 30-day complete ceasefire, which President Trump expected to be the first step for a permanent peace agreement.
Moscow and Kiev accused each other on Wednesday of launching air attacks that damaged the infrastructure, a few hours after their leaders agreed with a limited ceasefire to interrupt attacks on energy infrastructure.
Zelensky, at a joint meeting in Helsinki with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, said Putin’s words were not enough and Ukraine would provide a list of energy facilities that expects the United States and its allies to help monitor.
“I really want to have control. But I believe the main agent of this control must be the United States of America,” he said, adding that Kiev would be ready to commit to a ceasefire.
The Ukrainian leader continued to say that, “If the Russians do not attack our facilities, we will definitely not attack theirs.”
Earlier on Wednesday, the Kiev Air Force stated that it destroyed 72 of the 145 drones launched by Russia at night, while the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its units dropped 57 Ukrainian drones.
