Zelensky says Ukraine prevented Russian advance on Kursk for fifth day in a row

Ukrainian forces managed to hold their position as Russian troops tried to break through their lines in the Kursk region for the fifth day in a row, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday (14).

Ukraine invaded Russia on August 6 and quickly secured control of 1,300 square kilometers with more than 100 settlements. The initial advance has stalled, and Moscow said it recovered several settlements last week.

“For five days, the Russians have been trying to break through our defense in the Kursk region. Our men are standing firm and counterattacking,” Zelensky said on X after a meeting with the country’s top commander.

He did not elaborate on the matter, and Reuters was unable to independently verify the battlefield reports.

The Ukrainian General Staff noted on Facebook that the Kursk operation is ongoing, while Moscow’s troops continue to hit Russian territories with guided bombs.

On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry stressed that it was carrying out offensive operations in several locations in the region and that its glide bombs had hit a concentration of Ukrainian troops.

On Wednesday (9), the ministry said it had regained control of two villages.

Zelensky also described the battles on the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove fronts in eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops advanced, as “particularly fierce.”
