Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Kiev and his partners were considering organizing a high-level meeting between Ukraine, Russia, the United States, European Union and United Kingdom as part of an effort to end Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in Kiev, after two telephone conversations with US President Donald Trump, the Ukrainian leader said the meeting will take place as soon as possible and to be headquartered by Turkey, Vatican or Switzerland.
“We are considering a meeting of all teams at a high level,” he said.
Zelensky said he talked to Trump personally on Monday before the American leader calling Russian President Vladimir Putin, and again later, in a conversation involving France leaders, Finland, Germany, Italy and the European Union.
Trump said, after his connection with Putin, that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately begin negotiations” to a ceasefire.
Zelensky stated that during his initial connection with Trump, he emphasized the need for a ceasefire and sanctions on Russia, as well as the importance of Kiev’s allies not reaching Russia without Ukraine.
“I’m very focused, it’s a challenging moment [e não fácil] For us now, ”he said.
Ukraine and Russia made direct negotiations in Istanbul last week at the request of the United States. The conversations highlighted how far they are about the vision of ending the war, which is already in its fourth year.
Zelensky said he hoped Europe announce a new “strong” package of sanctions to Russia, although it has given no further details. He asked the United States to sanction Russia’s banking and energy sectors to reduce revenue for his military needs.
He said he hopes that a large exchange of prisoners agreed in principle in negotiations in Istanbul will happen on days or weeks.
