THE Turkey will participate in the peace conference in Ukrainewhich Kyiv is hosting in Malta next weekend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said after a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Malta announced yesterday, Friday, that it will host the peace summit, at the request of the Ukrainian presidency, on October 28 and 29. Similar sessions were held in Saudi Arabia and Denmark this year.
“We discussed the next round of peace negotiations in Malta. Turkey will participate in it, adding its voice and position of prestige,” the Ukrainian leader wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
No representative of Russia will take part in this meeting, according to the Ukrainian press.
Erdogan and Zelensky also discussed Ukrainian grain exports, according to the Ukrainian president.
“Ukraine remains committed to its key role as the guarantor of global food security and enables the functioning of the Black Sea grain corridor,” Zelensky added.
Turkey has assumed a mediating role in the conflict in Ukraine for a year and a half. Under its auspices, along with the UN, Kiev and Moscow reached an agreement last year to allow the export of Ukrainian grain, which is vital to global food security.
However, Moscow pulled out of the deal in mid-July, and Ankara has since been trying to bring those sides back to the table, hoping it would lead to broader peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
Zelensky also said he thanked Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his “unceasing support for Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and integrity.”
