Ukraine plans to increase electricity exports to the European Union to help the EU “resist energy pressure” from Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.
“We will increase electricity exports to consumers in the European Union,” the Ukrainian president said in a video message.
Zelenskiy’s remarks came a day after the agreement among European Union member states to coordinately reduce gas consumption to help Germany after drastic cuts to the flow through the Nord Stream pipeline.
Kyiv and the EU accuse Moscow of exploiting natural gas as an economic and political weapon.
“Despite the war, we ensured the integration of Ukrainian networks into the European system in record time,” the Ukrainian president said, adding: “Exports allow us not only to increase our foreign exchange earnings, but also to help our partners resist the Russian energy pressure. Gradually, we will make Ukraine a country that guarantees Europe’s energy security.”
President Zelensky also commented in his message on the destruction of part of the Antonivsky bridge in the Kherson region (south) which is under the control of Russian forces and which the Ukrainian army is seeking to recapture. “All the bridges will be rebuilt, but by us,” he said, explaining that this particular bridge is of strategic importance for resupplying Russian troops.
