Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the West on Saturday night to impose sanctions on Russia’s nuclear industry, amid an exchange of blame between Kyiv and Moscow over attacks on Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest.
Russia is using this factory in southern Ukraine to terrorize the world and blackmail the Ukrainian political leadership and the entire planet, Mr. Zelensky said in his evening speech.
Russia, a country with a nuclear arsenal, is building nuclear power plants in various countries.
Mr. Zelenskiy accused Russian troops of using the Zaporizhia facility as a stronghold and firing from there against Nikopolis and Marganets, across the Dnieper River.
Warning that the development of the Russian armed forces “increases the radioactive threat to Europe to a level that did not exist even in the most difficult moments (…) of the cold war”. He demanded a “harsh reaction” from the West.
