“Zelensky was betrayed by the West and is alone”, says USP professor

For the professor of international law at the University of São Paulo (USP) Maristela Basso, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was abandoned by Western forces after promises that he would have support in a possible Russian invasion of the country.

“It is a very difficult situation for Zelensky because he was, to put it crudely, absolutely betrayed by NATO. [Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte] and by their ‘friends’ in the West – the United States and the European Union, but especially NATO,” Basso said in an interview with CNN this Saturday (5th).

She highlights the fact that NATO is resisting sending support troops and has also refused to support Ukraine in an action to close its airspace, a request by the country to prevent Russian air strikes.

“NATO’s secretary-general went public before the invasion numerous times, saying that Ukraine was not a member but could count on the alliance’s partnership in a possible Russian invasion”, said the professor. “Now Zelensky is alone.”
