Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the Italian Parliament on Tuesday (22) and stressed that the country wants to “restore peace with Italy, with Europe and the European Union”.
In his remarks, Zelensky highlighted the call for more pressure and more sanctions against Russia, a request made when he addressed the parliamentarians of the countries to which he spoke.
“Stop the killings, help the Ukrainian families, we need to return to peace. We need troops out of Ukraine. We need to mine Ukraine and restore the country with you, Italy, Europe, the European Union,” he declared.
“The invasion has been going on for 27 days, we need more pressure. We need Russia not to seek more military in Libya, but to seek peace. This war is being felt everywhere in the world,” said the Ukrainian president.
“Our people never wanted to fight, we are Europeans like you. You know who brought the war to Ukraine, you know that very well. Support sanctions against Russian oil and ships in their ports so they can feel the price of oppression.”
Volodymyr Zelensky also defined Ukraine as the “gate of Europe” from the point of view of Russian troops, and said that Ukrainian forces were “about to survive” this war.
“For Russian troops, Ukraine is the gateway to Europe — where they want to invade, but barbarism must not be allowed in,” he said.
After finishing his speech, Zelensky was applauded by parliamentarians and praised by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
“The arrogance of the Russian government collided with the dignity of the Ukrainian people, who managed to circumvent Moscow’s expansionist desires and impose a great cost on the invading army,” Draghi said.
