At least 35 people were killed and 71 injured in a bus crash that transported worshipers to a religious gathering for the Easter weekend in the southeastern city of Chipinge, police said.
“There was an accident last night. At the moment there are 35 dead and 71 injured,” police spokesman and deputy commissioner Paul Niati told AFP.
The vehicle overturned and fell into a ravine. He transported believers of the Christian Church of Zion, as the spokesman clarified.
According to the first testimonies, the bus was carrying more passengers than the allowed limit.
Traffic in Zimbabwe is a common occurrence and is mainly due to the poor condition of the road.
The Evangelical Christian Church of Zion has many believers in the area and every year a large pilgrimage takes place in neighboring South Africa.
