Zimbabwean authorities begin consultations with the private sector on the introduction of cryptocurrencies

The government of Zimbabwe announced that it is holding consultations with stakeholders on options for using bitcoin and its possible legalization as a means of payment.

This was stated by Charles Wekwete, Permanent Secretary and Director of the Department of Infrastructure Development of Electronic Government of Zimbabwe, at the Summit of the Computer Society of Zimbabwe (CSZ).
reported local media. According to Vekwete, many governments still do not understand cryptocurrencies and are also skeptical or hostile to them for fears that they could be used to launder money or finance illegal activities. However, there are also countries that are ready to legalize bitcoin, following the example of El Salvador.

Vekwete said the Zimbabwean authorities intend to develop sound cryptoasset regulation rules to prevent potential risks and keep users safe. The government of the country has a desire to study in detail the possibilities of cryptocurrencies. But before making major changes to Zimbabwe’s legislation, the government considers it necessary to consult with all stakeholders from different sectors of activity in order to gather their views together and take them into account when developing regulations.

In turn, CSZ President Allen Saruchera added that blockchain and cryptocurrencies can be used in any industry. The Computer Society of Zimbabwe has expressed its willingness to assist the government in the safe implementation of cryptocurrencies.

Earlier, BitMEX CEO Alexander Höptner suggested that in the near future, many developing countries will legalize bitcoin following El Salvador. The same opinion is shared by the founder of Cardano Charles Hoskinson (Charles Hoskinson).
