Ziraldo will be laid to rest and buried this Sunday in Rio de Janeiro in ceremonies open to the public

The wake of cartoonist, illustrator and writer Ziraldo Alves Pinto will be held this Sunday (7), starting at 10 am, at the headquarters of the Brazilian Press Association, in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in a ceremony open to the public.

The burial will take place at 4:30 pm, at the São João Batista Cemetery, and will also be open to the public, according to the press office of the Ziraldo Institute.

One of the most important names in children's literature, Ziraldo died at the age of 91 of natural causes. The information was confirmed by the family.

Life and work

Ziraldo was responsible for marking generations with his children's stories. He was also one of the creators of the newspaper “O Pasquim”, in the 1960s, one of the main newspapers of the time.

Born on October 24, 1932 in Caratinga, Minas Gerais, he was named after the combination of his mother, Zizinha, and his father, Geraldo.

When he was just six years old, he published his first drawing, through the newspaper Folha de Minas. His first job was at the newspaper Folha da Manhã (now Folha de S.Paulo), in 1954, where he published a humor column. He also worked at O ​​Cruzeiro magazine in 1957 and Jornal do Brasil in 1963.

In the 1960s, Ziraldo launched the first colored Brazilian comic book by a single author, entitled “Pererê”. The work was banned in 1964, when the military regime banned all magazines from newsstands. Also at that time, the journalist was one of those responsible for founding the newspaper “O Pasquim”, which went harshly against the government of the time.
