Cyprus was in favor of the European Union taking timely action in emerging conflicts before they develop into a crisis, as well as the more effective use of the European Peace Facility, said Cypriot Defense Minister Charalambos Petridis after the Council of Ministers in charge of Brussels. In particular, Mr. Petridis noted:
“In the context of the work of the Council today, we discussed the course of implementation of the Compass Strategy as well as the effectiveness of the Missions and Operations of the Common Defense and Security Policy.
As Cyprus, we have supported the European Union’s timely action in emerging conflicts before they escalate into a crisis, as well as the more effective use of the European Peace Facility.
At the meeting of the European Defense Agency, I supported the creation of an innovation hub, called for the exclusion of defense spending from the budget deficit process, and noted the need to simplify procedures for joint procurement of defense equipment.
We also had the opportunity to learn about developments in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine by the Ukrainian Minister of Defense via video conference.
“Once again we strongly condemn the Russian invasion and stress the need to intensify diplomatic efforts for political dialogue between the two sides with a view to a ceasefire.”
