10 new iOS 16 features to explore right after installation

It is difficult to say that the release of iOS 16 in 2022 was a real revelation. Compared to iOS 15, there are not many big and noticeable innovations that really deserve attention. However, with small useful chips in the next numbered version of the operating system, everything is in perfect order.

1. It will turn out to find out the password from an already known Wi-Fi network

✓ How to try: open “Settings”, go to the Wi-Fi section, expand the menu of a known network and click on the “Password” field.

Prior to iOS 16, it was almost impossible to find out the password from a known Wi-Fi on an iPhone. This opportunity was often needed to transfer it to someone who has not yet connected to the network at home, in the office or any other location. Instead, Apple offered a smart way to share the password, but this feature only worked between a couple of gadgets from the manufacturer, and it worked, to be honest, no more than once in five. With the release of the new numbered version of the operating system, everything has changed for the better.

2. When creating a screenshot, you can copy text from it

✓ How to try: take a screenshot so that it contains the necessary text, click on the screenshot preview, then on the text selection button in the lower right corner of the screen, and then on the “Copy” button – the selected text will turn out and translate.

In iOS 16, developers have done a great job of recognizing text in images, including in Russian. A scenario that I personally found insanely in demand, its definition in the screenshots and further use at your discretion. So you can get some separate inscriptions from sites, and from images.

3. For the keyboard, you can enable tactile feedback

✓ How to try: open “Settings”, go to the “Sounds, haptic signals” section, expand the “Keyboard response” menu and turn on the “Haptic signals” switch.

A long-awaited feature for tactile typing, which gives the impression that this process takes place using a real keyboard, and not a virtual one. All current Apple smartphones use a special Taptic Engine, which makes all such signals extremely pleasant. That is why the chip is highly recommended for use.

4. Apple Music lets you subscribe to artist updates

✓ How to try: open “Music”, go to your favorite artist, click on the star button in the upper right corner of the screen.

It seems that Apple has realized that streaming services are actively used not only for convenient access to a huge music library. They also carry a huge social meaning. The listener should become closer to their favorite artist – at least, be among the first to learn about his latest releases. With the release of iOS 16, artists can now be added to your favorites list and receive notifications of their latest releases. If this feature works without failures, it will really be possible to actively use it.

5. You can create a pair of lock screens and quickly change them

✓ How to try: hold your finger on the lock screen, scroll through the created screens with a swipe, add a new one using the ⊕ button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Apple has been bringing its major operating systems closer together for years. This, for example, is clearly seen in macOS and iPadOS, which are systematically acquiring similar features, exchanging popular applications, and more. With the release of a new numbered version of the operating system for the iPhone, Apple begins the convergence of iOS and watchOS. For example, on the company’s smartphones, a quick change in the design of the lock screen with mini-widgets is now available, which, by the way, have clearly migrated here from the Apple Watch. It’s like swiping smart watch faces.

6. iPhone can now also create “Short Notes”

✓ How to try: open Settings, go to Control Center, add Quick Note to your list of shortcuts, launch it, and jot down your thoughts for the future.

“Short Notes” is great to use to quickly write down some fresh ideas that can visit your head at any time. Previously, for some reason, they were only available on the iPad. Apparently, Apple assumed that in order to quickly record something, an active user of the ecosystem would definitely reach for a tablet in a backpack or bag. In practice, everyone used the iPhone, but without this feature. Now you can try it, including on your smartphone. As it turned out, this is very convenient.

7. It will turn out to change the style of notifications to full or compact

✓ How to try: open “Settings”, go to the “Notifications” section and select one of the proposed types:

  • “Number” – the total number of notifications at the bottom of the screen;
  • “Stack” – grouping notifications by application;
  • “List” – a complete list of notifications without grouping.

In iOS 16, the notification system has been redesigned. Now they are shown at the bottom of the lock screen. If you select the Count option, the total number of digits will be shown between the camera and flashlight quick launch buttons. “Stack” and “List” differ in the overall display, which is activated after the activation of the corresponding menu – either with or without grouping by applications.

8. You can update your system security without downloading new iOS

✓ How to try: open “Settings”, go to the “General” section, expand the menu “Software Update” → “Auto-update”, turn off the switches “Download iOS updates” and “Install iOS updates”, and also make sure that the “Threat Responses” toggle switch and system files” is active.

Previously, to get the latest security patches, you had to install the entire new version of the operating system. After the release of iOS 16, there is absolutely no need for this. Now the most important patches can be automatically downloaded without a full update of the Apple smartphone. By and large, if you want to stay on the most stable build of iOS, now you can really do it.

9. You can hide the Spotlight desktop button

✓ How to try: open “Settings”, go to the “Home Screen” section, turn off the “Show on the Home Screen” switch in the “Search” menu.

The developers decided to focus the increased attention of users on the search engine built into iOS 16 – Spotlight. Therefore, in addition to the gesture launch, we also added a button that will help show the appropriate line to enter the required request. By and large, it makes absolutely no sense, so it is logical to hide it. Such an opportunity is provided, and to use it is a matter of a couple of seconds.

10. A set of edits from one photo can be copied to another

✓ How to try: open “Photo”, select a photo, go to the editing menu using the “Edit” button, make changes, click on the button with three dots in the upper right corner of the screen and select the “Copy edits” option – they are pasted for another image in the same way.

Another long-awaited feature of the operating system was the ability to copy a set of edits from one snapshot and paste it for another. This is great if you need to color or do some other general correction of the entire set of frames from the last trip somewhere, and all the photos were taken, plus or minus, in the same conditions.
