Two young preteens are about to make it to the Olympics. Sky Brown and Cocona Hiraki made history at just 12 years old by qualifying to compete in the category of skate at the next Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Brown will be Britain’s youngest summer Olympian, right behind Cecilia Colledge, who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics at age 11. For her part, Cocona is the youngest athlete in Japan.
Sky shared the news after finishing second in the Dew Tour de skate in Iowa. This victory was one of the biggest for the young athlete, as she suffered a fall last year that left her with a fractured wrist and skull.
Like Sky, Cocona will represent his country at just 12 years old after finishing fifth on the Dew Tour. Before her, Japan’s youngest athlete was swimmer Yukari Takemoto, who competed in the 1968 Mexico Olympics at the age of 13.
The two talented girls will participate in the games alongside 20 athletes from the skate. This is the first year that the sport is part of the Olympic Games, which will take place in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
If either of them manages to win gold, they will become the youngest Olympian in history since diver Marjorie Gestring, who won the gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
