We are impressed by the imposing constructions of man in the world: the Pyramids in Egypt, the Taj Mahal in India, the Colosseum in Rome, the skyscrapers of New York and Notre Dame in Paris and again and again … but Mother Nature is even more powerful. Its creations, its mysteries, its dimensions leave us speechless like few other things in the world. Not only because Nature has the power to make us feel good, but above all because it makes us feel better – let’s think about how many times we say we want to take a walk by the sea or in the mountains, or we want to spend a day in the woods or on the edge of a lake to help us put our ideas in order, to find a solution to a problem or even to find inspiration.
It is not difficult to understand why. There is also a subject that deals with studying the attraction of man towards nature. It is the so-called biofilia, a distinctive trait of mankind identified in the mid-1980s by bEO Wilson. A Harvard professor and invited to lecture at universities around the world, Wilson confessed that he preferred the Guinean forest, with all its hardships, to the rich but artificial environments of universities. The reason was simple: “I’m attracted to nature,” he said, and called this attraction “biophilia.” Not only that, according to other studies, such as those conducted by Affective Ecology laboratory at the University of Valle d’Aosta of professor Giuseppe Barbiero, our attention regenerates faster and better with immersion in a natural context; finally man, according to science – but also from our experience – would be able to establish solid relationships with the environment.
That’s why we get so excited in front of a sunset, the Northern Lights, a thousand-year-old forest … There are, then, certain details natural phenomena, visible only in certain periods of the year and only in certain places, which are like that rare and particular to be almost incredible until you see them live.
