120 Hz and 4K with HDR in affordable smartphones: an insider leaked the characteristics of Snapdragon 6 Gen 1

The modern high-tech market is famous for the stable leaks of classified information for literally any reason – and the new processor from Qualcomm, apparently, will not be an exception. The fact is that Evan Blass, one of the most famous and reliable insiders on the planet, published an image on his social networks with a list of features and key features of the upcoming Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, which the company itself has not even announced yet. And these characteristics look more than intriguing, because they can potentially bring features to the affordable smartphone segment that were previously only available to flagships.

For example, an image leaked by an insider to the network indicates that the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor will provide the ability to record video in 4K resolution with support for HDR mode. This is actually a huge win, as many more or less affordable smartphones on the market today only support 1080p video recording, which is rather strange given the current state of affairs. Also in the characteristics of the novelty it is indicated that the processor will be produced according to the 4 nm technical process – this is likely to have a positive effect on the energy efficiency of the system on a chip.

In addition, the system-on-a-chip will include a proprietary accelerator Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, which will be used for machine learning and various scenarios using artificial intelligence. The upcoming chip will give affordable smartphones and mid-rangers access to the Snapdragon X62 modem, Smart Transmit 2.0 power-saving technology, and Quick Charge 4 Plus fast charging. Again, for an affordable segment, this is a very impressive list of benefits that was previously available exclusively in flagships. Now, apparently, a lot of advanced technologies can be seen on low-cost devices.

And, of course, it is worth mentioning separately the support for a display refresh rate of 120 Hz, which Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 also supports. So if the information is correct, and the leaked image is very similar to the official data from the press release, in the foreseeable future, the market for affordable smartphones should change dramatically. Support for 120Hz, fast charging, and the ability to shoot 4K video with HDR on low-cost gadgets is one of the biggest upgrades in Qualcomm’s history.
