The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PCRS) said 31 newborn babies were evacuated from Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza.
The PCRS said in a statement shared on Sunday (19) that its ambulance teams were “able to evacuate 31 premature babies from Al-Shifa Hospital”.
The work was carried out in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
“They were transported by Red Crescent ambulances south in preparation for their transfer to the Emirates Hospital in Rafah,” the statement said.
The Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed the evacuation.
Medhet Abbas, spokesperson for the ministry, told CNN in a message on Sunday that “30 premature babies were evacuated from Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza by the United Nations team.”
It is unclear why the ministry’s figure differed from that provided by PCRS – the WHO previously said there were 32 babies left at Al-Shifa.
The hospital and its surroundings suffered heavy shelling last week and were unable to operate incubators for babies due to lack of fuel. Several newborn babies in Al-Shifa died.
