44-year-old student says she cried a lot after mockery, “but stopping is not in my plans”

Victim of ageism, the student of Biomedicine Patricia Linares, 44 years old, he found himself in the last week facing a situation he never imagined experiencing.

A freshman at a university in Bauru, in the interior of São Paulo, she was in the classroom on Thursday (9) when a group of colleagues called her to alert her that there was a video about her circulating in WhatsApp groups.

Despite the curiosity to know what it was about, she says that the first reaction was to put it aside. “I was doing some difficult anatomy work and it was almost my turn to present,” she told the Estadão.

Shortly afterwards, however, Patrícia ended up seeing the video, which in the following days went viral on social networks and generated revolt among users. She only became aware of the dimension that had taken over the weekend.

In the video, three Unisagrado Biomedicine students comment, in a mocking tone, on the fact that a classmate is over 40 years old.

“Quiz of the day: how do you ‘deregister’ a classmate?”, says one of the students. Then another commented: “She is 40 years old, she was supposed to be retired”.

The target of the attacks, whose name is not mentioned, is Patrícia, who entered college at the end of last month. “When I saw the video, I cried a lot, but stopping is not in my plans,” she said.

She says she last saw the students involved on Thursday, but didn’t want to talk to them. “I was very sad, and that sadness is still with me,” she continued.

On the following day, Friday (10) the three students did not go to college. At the same time, students from Patrícia’s class and from other courses went to her to show solidarity.

“Deep down, I wanted to stop going to college until it was all over, but I can’t,” he said. “I need to keep going, for myself and for all people who suffer this kind of gratuitous retaliation.”

“My dream of studying in the health area has always existed”

A trader for most of her life, Patrícia says that she decided to take a degree in Biomedicine after having to close her clothing store due to the covid-19 pandemic.

“I had this store since 2012, but in recent years I couldn’t keep it open anymore,” he said.

Unemployed, she decided to recalculate her plans for the future. The choice of the Biomedicine course was influenced by the mother, a nurse throughout her life.

“My dream of studying in the health area has always existed. I had this desire since I was a girl, since I was a child ”, she says.

Until then, the circumstances of life, however, had never allowed her to study.

With the support of her husband, she decided that this would be the moment, and she threw herself into going to college for the first time. “I’m very excited, it’s been wonderful”, said the student, who turns 45 this Tuesday (14).

According to her, there is no forecast for a party to celebrate this year’s birthday, whose eve was a little busier than usual. “Tomorrow (Tuesday, the 14th) there’s class, it’s an ordinary day. I’m focused on college.”

About the support she has received on social networks, in the classroom and in other environments, she still leaves a message.

“I am immensely grateful and would like to say, to everyone who sent me support, that they feel embraced by me”, said the student, who even became more active on Instagram to follow the expressions of affection.

In one of the posts, she shares the song “Clube da Esquina Nº 2?, famous in the voice of Milton Nascimento.

In the publication, he highlights a verse from the song: “Dreams do not age”. “I’ve been through so much in my life, that’s not going to shake me”, said Patrícia.

In a note, Unisagrado said it repudiates “any act of prejudice and discrimination”.

He also stated that the necessary administrative measures are being taken for the disciplinary investigation of those involved.

“We emphasize that our objective is to educate, a fundamental and obligatory verb in the construction of an increasingly fair society”.

The report was unable to contact the students involved in the video.
