5 TV series that talk about female sex, without taboos

Those who, like me, had the opportunity to experience their adolescence around the mid-2000s, know very well that many of us – yes, I am referring above all to girls – had rather confused ideas about sexuality. Reflecting on it, I realized that our utter disorientation was caused by the fact that no one ever bothered to explain what sex really was about and that they talked about sexuality in a clear and open way. Films and TV series were always narrated from a male perspective and when there was a girl of our age talking, the only topic on the table was always and only the first time.

Sex and the city paved the way and, fortunately, over the years other series followed that began to speak to the female world in a more truthful way, addressing issues such as masturbation, orgasm or casual sex and dispelling many taboos.

If you don’t know which ones to choose, here are the best 5 to start from in our opinion:

SEX EDUCATION

What things this series showed us? Aimee she experiences sex almost as a duty, and when her new boyfriend asks her what she likes she is bewildered. She finally begins to figure it out after masturbating. Lily she never hides her sexual desire, but when she realizes she is bisexual, she is finally satisfied. Ola she suffers from vaginismus, which makes it quite complicated for her to feel pleasure, but nothing is impossible. Scattered examples, however, help us understand how multifaceted our sexuality is. And in the series there is even talk of sexuality (if you’ve never heard of it, Muriel explains it here!)

NORMAL PEOPLE

The love story that forms the backbone of this series is beautiful and romantic, but fortunately there is not only that. Sex is told in a real way, without too many frills. The first time of Marianne it is more or less like that of us mere mortals: a mixture of embarrassment and fear in which you do not know what to do or how to move. Or when she sleeps with Gareth and he also discovers that sex can also be very unsatisfying. Here, all things that it would be appropriate to know first to get prepared for these eventualities and not feel wrong.

OUTLANDER

Okay, don’t get sidetracked by the somewhat fantasy theme of time travel, 18th century costumes and other cuties. Because one of the best qualities of this series is to talk about sex from an almost exclusively female point of view. Claire she is a woman who is not afraid to take control within the couple and to ask her partner what she needs and what she wants. Just to remind us that sex is done in two and that our pleasure is not a plus of the whole experience, but a fundamental part. According to some sexologists, in fact, this series “pushes women to talk openly about what they prefer when they are in bed.”

GIRLS

This one is a few years older than the others, but is aging very well. Not only because it tells what it means to go live alone, work, have new experiences and start pining for love stories that lead nowhere, but also for the disenchanted way in which she talks about sex. Like having to manage sexual partners, stuffed with porn videos, who have no idea how female pleasure really works: it is good for someone to remind us of this sad reality (unfortunately!). It will be up to us to take things to a more real level.

LOVE & ANARCHY

One of the new entries of the house Netflix has a rather sui generis plot, but this series totally clears female masturbation. Or rather, masturbation also as a daily practice (for the protagonist Sofie, even several times a day) to relieve stress and tension. Ah, just for info, it also shows that some women masturbate while watching porn videos just like men. I know, for some and for some it seems the discovery of the century.
