Samsung today officially announced the new Samsung ISOCELL JN1 50-megapixel image sensor. It is touted as the most compact of the 50-megapixel sensor: the size of one pixel is only 0.64 microns – this allows you to either reduce the traditional camera protrusion or completely abandon it.

ISOCELL JN1 has an optical format of 1 / 2.76 inches. The company says it has a 16% improvement in light sensitivity over the previous 48-megapixel sensors. It also supports combining pixels into groups of four for greater light capture – the size of such a pixel is already 1.28 microns, and the resolution in this mode is reduced to 12.5 megapixels. As a result, the new sensor allows you to take brighter pictures in low light conditions.

ISOCELL JN1 supports proprietary technologies Smart ISO, ISOCELL 2.0 and Double Super PDAF (phase detection autofocus uses twice as many pixels as in the case of the Super PDAF system). Supports 4K video recording at 60 fps and video recording at 240 fps at Full HD resolution.
The image sensor can be connected to any lens: wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle or telephoto. It can be used both in the main camera of an inexpensive smartphone and in the front camera of a top model. Mass production has already begun, serial smartphones with ISOCELL JN1 are on the way.
