A survey by the National Council of Justice indicates that only half of the prison population and civil servants in the Brazilian prison system – considered a priority group for vaccination against Covid-19 – completed the immunization scheme against the disease caused by Sars-Cov-2, with two doses or a single dose of the immunizing agent. The index is lower than that of the general population, which is 66.5%.
According to the agency, there was a slowdown in the vaccination of this portion of the population in the first half of December. According to information provided to the CNJ, there was a growth of 0.6% in the total doses applied in the last 15 days.
In the same period, there was also a growth of deaths in the prison system was 0.6%, with four deaths – all of prisoners -, totaling 636. The number of cases had a growth of 0.3%. The information was released by the agency.
The numbers are part of a survey carried out since June 2020 by the Department of Monitoring and Inspection of the Prison System and the CNJ’s Social and Educational Measures Execution System (DMF). The monitoring is supported by the Making Justice program – a partnership between the Council and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and support from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
According to the data collected, 104,850 cases of Covid-19 were counted in units of the prison system and the socio-educational system since the beginning of the pandemic. In prisons, there are records of contamination of 67,391 inmates and 26,051 servers.

In the socio-educational system, there was a record of only one death in the last 15 days, reaching 115. All deaths registered in this system are of civil servants. There was also a 0.5% increase in the number of cases, totaling 11,408 records of the disease – 2,929 among adolescents and 8,479 among professionals.
In all, 48.6% of adolescents have already received at least one dose of the vaccine, while only 9.3% completed the cycle with two doses or a single dose – among professionals, this phase has already been reached by 99.9% of the staff .
Information on vaccines in deprivation and liberty facilities is collected with support from the Prison System Monitoring and Inspection Groups and the Socio-Educational Measures Execution System (GMF) of courts across the country. In this edition of the bulletin, six state courts have provided updated information on the status of Covid-19 in local contexts.
The bulletin also maintains past information submitted by GMFs in 21 other states, as well as by the Federal Regional Courts of the 2nd Region (TRF2), the 3rd Region (TRF3) and the 4th Region (TRF4).
