Rostelecom has officially submitted an application to the State Commission on Radio Frequencies to test a fifth-generation cellular network (5G) in the underground metro of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan, Izvestia reported, citing its sources. In this application, the Russian company asks the state to allocate a frequency range from 3.3 to 4.1 GHz for testing new generation cellular communication points – these are the frequencies that are optimal for 5G in terms of coverage quality in large cities and the cost of building appropriate networks.
But, unfortunately, the application may well be rejected – the thing is that at the moment this frequency range is already occupied by satellite communications. Accordingly, the state body, according to experts in the field, is not eager to transfer frequencies into the hands of a private cellular operator. On the other hand, if representatives of Rostelecom nevertheless submitted an application, then, perhaps, there are still some chances for a positive result in the dialogue between the operator and the state. For example, experts believe that the State Committee for Radio Frequencies may well partially allocate this range for the fifth generation of cellular networks.
Actually, this is what is stated in the application of Rostelecom – the cellular network operator against the state to allocate him a frequency range from 3.3 to 3.4 GHz and from 3.8 to 4.1 GHz – these frequencies will be used for testing 5G at ground stations metro in three major cities, while underground stations require frequencies from 3.4 to 3.8 GHz. At the same time, which is important, we are not talking about the full deployment of the technology, but about testing the fifth generation cellular network – the operator wants to test the technology in order to further implement 5G in the country. The commission on radio frequencies itself has so far refrained from commenting on this issue – apparently, the final decision has not yet been made.
