6.6-magnitude earthquake in China leaves nearly 50 dead and dozens injured

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 shook the Chinese province of Sichuan, the provincial capital of Chengdu and Luding county, causing the death of 50 people, mountain landslides and extensive material damage.

According to the Chinese Earthquake Center, the event occurred on September 5 at 12:52 pm The population was previously warned through local television networks and cell phone messages.

Roads and houses near the epicenter were severely damaged by landslides, communication services were temporarily interrupted and there was damage to the electrical network that affected 40,000 inhabitants.

The Ministry of Emergency Management reported a landslide that blocked a rural highway, which was covered with rocks.

The quake also rattled the provincial capital Chengdu, where an outbreak of Covid-19 has confined thousands of residents due to China’s strict zero-coronavirus policy.
