Microsoft has reported bad news for users of operating systems such as Windows 7 and 8.1. The company has decided to close the OneDrive service for these systems.

From January 1, Microsoft will stop providing updates to the personal version of OneDrive for Windows 7 and 8.1, and from March 1, 2022, the application will stop syncing files to the cloud storage, making it virtually useless.
Note that free support for Windows 7 has long been discontinued – in January 2020. At the same time, Windows 8.1 is planned to be supported until January 10, 2023, and one of the key features of this version of the OS at the time of launch was integration with OneDrive. Apparently, OneDrive-related OS features will simply stop working after March 1st.
However, the share of Windows 7 among all PCs with the Microsoft operating system as of October 2021, according to StatCounter, is still 13.56%, and the share of Windows 8.1 is 3.17%. In Russia, their share is much higher – 20.5% and 4.09%, respectively, which in total gives 24.59% – almost a quarter of all PCs with Microsoft OS.
